This is because 95% of the amount you pay goes towards the running of the Perisher Range Resorts. It is only 35% if you buy the pass from the Jindabyne NPWS office or online!

Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) – Perisher Valley Fire Station

The FRNSW website states:

"Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is the State Government agency responsible for the provision of fire, rescue and hazmat services in cities and towns across New South Wales. The FRNSW is one of the key agencies involved in the response phase of most emergency or disaster events throughout NSW".

FRNSW operates the Perisher Valley Fire Station (PVFS) which is based in Perisher Valley and services the Perisher Range including the Perisher Range Resorts of Perisher, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega.

PVFS is staffed by permanent fire fighters stationed in Perisher Valley during winter but not summer. SLOPES strongly advocates that the PVFS should be properly staffed all year round.

Outside the winter season, the PVFS relies on volunteer fire fighter capability primarily from Jindabyne as follows:

apart from Easter (Back to Perisher weekend), some December/January weeks and any other periods of high occupancy, days of high fire risk or actual forest fire in KNP and a few weeks either side of the winter season, there is no one based at PVSF outside winter
resourcing at those times will be from Jindabyne using retained (volunteer) fire fighters who have to travel the 36 kms in 4WD vehicles to get to PVFS to access the fire fighting vehicles and equipment and then respond to the call – a minimum response time of about 40 minutes.
